Waste management and Climate Change
ESA has outlined the role of the waste management sector on carbon emissions and climate change. Deputy Chief Executive (Policy) Mike Walker highlighted the 30% reduction in the carbon emissions of the industry across the EU since 1993, and noted that waste provides around one third of the UK’s renewable energy. However he also noted the need for a cautious approach when comparing the carbon footprints of different technologies as there can be large variations in inputs and outputs over the lifetime of a waste management contract, and answers were largely dependent on the assumptions made.
Mr David Sargent, MD of London Waste and an ESA Member highlighted the need for private and community sectors to work together, and for the need for new infrastructure to deal with London’s Waste.
The debate, held on 10 May was organised by the London Community Recycling Network.
