Scotland’s Proposals for Zero Waste
The Scottish ESA has responded to the Scottish Government’s consultation on potential legislative measures to implement zero waste.
While welcoming aspects of the Scottish Government’s approach, SESA stated that focusing on zero waste should not be used as a reason to avoid making pressing decisions now about the need for more waste management infrastructure.
SESA supported producer responsibility and development of markets for the return of recycled materials back into the economy.
Noting high recycling rates of some materials within the business waste stream, SESA advocated a focus on identifying and expanding suitable markets for appropriate materials and did not support placing an extended obligation on local authorities to provide recycling services for business waste.
SESA also urged the Scottish Government to promote sustainable procurement.
