Pre-Budget Statement: & what about recycling?

ESA has noted that the absence of new announcements for the waste management sector in the Pre-Budget Report is a lost opportunity for green growth.

ESA Chief Executive Dirk Hazell said:

"As far as recycling more energy and material in waste is concerned, we have not spotted any new drivers in the Pre-Budget Report to promote "green growth" or Britain's compliance with the EU requirement to divert more waste from landfill by 2013."

"Green public procurement, for example, could generate sustainable new British jobs in a testing climate, strengthen recycling markets and help Britain to comply with EU environmental laws."

"We alerted the Government more than a year ago to the counter-cyclical potential, if planning and procurement constraints were eased, of accelerating investment in new recycling infrastructure: while that opportunity has passed Britain by, we hope Infrastructure UK may before next year's Budget spot our sector's considerable potential contribution to green growth ."
