Draft incineration BREF
The second draft of the BREF on waste incineration was published for consultation in March 2004. The BREF covers three main thermal treatment techniques: incineration, pyrolysis and gasification and refers to combinations of all three.
The document also covers:
- waste reception, handling and storage;
- the effect of waste pre-treatment on the selection and operation of waste incineration processes;
- applied flue-gas treatment processes;
- applied residue treatment techniques;
- Applied waste water treatment techniques; and
- some aspects of energy recovery, performance achieved and techniques used.
The document seeks to provide information concerning dedicated waste incineration installations. It does not cover coincineration processes such as cement kilns and large combustion plants, which will be covered by the BREF dealing specifically with these industries.
No size threshold has been applied, however, limited information has been supplied concerning smaller incineration processes.
The document does not deal with decisions concerning the selection of waste incineration as a waste treatment option, nor does it compare incineration with other waste treatments.
