ESA Supports Climate Change Bill Waste Provisions
23.01.2008
Commenting ahead of expected consideration of amendments to provisions for waste charging pilots of the Climate Change Bill today in the House of Lords, ESA Chief Executive Dirk Hazell said: “Proposals in the Bill for piloting household waste minimisation incentive schemes could help householders to be more sustainable. ESA welcomes this further opportunity to make Britain a Recycling Society. “Judging by the volume of amendments tabled, peers on all sides of the House of Lords are interested in the Bill’s waste provisions and we assume their intention is to improve rather than remove waste provisions in the Bill. “ESA welcomes amendments to strengthen the pilot as we see force in the argument of Liberal Democrat and Conservative peers that both rural and urban areas should be assessed. We hope pilot waste charging projects soon become reality.”
ENDS Notes to Editors 1) ESA is the UK’s sectoral trade association for waste and secondary resource management, an industry accounting for 0.7% GDP. 2) The Climate Change Bill was introduced into the House of Lords on 14th November and is currently in committee, the 6th day on 23 January when it is probably that the provisions on pilot waste charging schemes may be considered. See: http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2007-08/climatechangehl.html. Both Conservative and Liberal Democrat peers have tabled a series of amendments on the section relating to waste charging, a number of which are expected to be selected debate. The amendments on the waste provisions can be found here (amendments 183BB to 183ZJ) http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200708/ldbills/009/amend/ml009-via.htm 3) For further information please contact Dr Steven Toole in the ESA’s Press Office on 020 7591 3219.
