Recycling Electronics: A Role for Everyone

18.02.2009

Following media coverage of Greenpeace’s audited export of a television, ESA has noted that everyone has a role to play in ensuring such products are safely and appropriately recycled.

Commenting, ESA Chief Executive Dirk Hazell said: “While there is no suggestion that any of ESA’s Members were involved in the incident reported by Greenpeace, no-one is complacent and we all have a role to play in ensuring electrical goods are safely and lawfully recycled.”

“Our Members operate many excellent civic amenity sites, typically displaying telephone numbers enabling the public to report anything suspicious which they may see. We want the public to sustain confidence in recycling and we encourage the public to use this facility,” he added.

“While ESA did advise the Government to adopt stricter approaches to producer responsibility, we are where we are. However it is particularly important, in a context when the Landfill Tax is continuing to rise, that a portion of that increase is earmarked to the Environment Agency’s crimebusting activities so Britain is increasingly seen to be a zero tolerance country for environmental crime,” he concluded.
