ESA notes positive contribution of energy from waste following IEA call for sustainable electricity production

ESA has welcomed the International Energy Agency's call in its new report for electricity production to stop exacerbating climate change and instead to rely more on renewables.
ESA's Chief Executive Dirk Hazell comments:
"The IEA's call for electricity production to rely much less on fossil fuels is welcome.
Within the UK, the waste management industry already provides one third of the country's renewable electricity and respected organisations such as the Institution of Civil Engineers have noted the potential of our sector to enhance this contribution.
Producing energy from waste through a range of technologies offers both the benefits of biofuels - without the disbenefit of displacing food production - and also, in strictly regulated facilities, of safely protecting the environment and human health by recovering value from non-recyclable waste. With the massive increases in household recycling achieved here over the last decade, our sector can help the UK to match Scandinavian environmental standards by combining this ongoing revolution in recycling performance with more state of the art recovery of energy from waste."
