In European Health & Safety week, ESA urges all to match best
19.10.2009
ESA marked the opening of European Health and Safety week with an encouragement to all participants in the waste management industry to meet the standards of the best.
ESA's Chief Executive, Dirk Hazell, commented: "Since 2004 ESA's Members have cut the sector's accident rate by 47% and our Members have pledged to secure a further 10% per year reduction by 2013." "At a time when collections for recycling have greatly increased the quantity and complexity of our Members' operations, this is a huge achievement but our Board is acutely aware that, even where operators are not at fault, every accident is a human tragedy and we are determined to sustain progress on health and safety while we further increase recovery of value from waste." "Health and safety is the first substantive item on the agenda of every meeting of ESA's Board where we set and then meet and monitor specific targets. Best practice is openly shared. We encourage all other participants - including local authorities' in-house collection services and not-for-profit operators - to match the very significant progress made by ESA's Members." "We are delighted that our industry's European association, FEAD, has now also focussed on health and safety. This is just one example of the private sector leading the way in social as well as economic and environmental sustainability."
