ESA response to Defra's Meeting EU Landfill Diversion Targets consultation
18.03.2010
ESA notes that Defra’s proposals merely seek to align the UK’s classification of municipal waste with that of its European partners. As such, Local Government responsibilities should not be changed and the private sector should be allowed to continue to divert commercial wastes from landfill as it has been doing to date with remarkable success.
ESA also notes that, while Scottish authorities seem to believe that the changes will make the 2013 Landfill Directive target easier to meet, Defra considers that work still needs to be done for England to fulfil its European obligations. ESA has consistently stated that the UK’s waste management industry is ready and able to deliver the required infrastructure to meet the targets if given the correct policy framework to address the key planning and funding constraints currently preventing a more rapid response.
