ESA welcomes the review of waste policy
18.06.2010
The Environmental Services Association (ESA) welcomes the announcement made at the Futuresource conference by Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman, that the Government would shortly commence a review of all existing waste policies. The Environment Secretary rightly recognised that the planning system needed to be “simplified and speeded up“ and ESA hopes the review will result in clear incentives to maximise the recovery of materials and energy from the UK’s waste stream and to remove barriers to potential investment.
At the same time, ESA urges the Government to ensure that the process of carrying out the review does not itself lead to further uncertainty and delays which would adversely affect the development of indispensable recycling and energy recovery infrastructure.
ENDS Notes to editors: The Environmental Services Association (ESA) is the trade association representing the UK’s waste management and secondary resources industry. ESA’s Members provide the essential waste and secondary resources management services to the public and private sectors. ESA works with all levels of government and regulators to deliver more sustainable waste management for the UK. For further details please visit www.esauk.org
