The Sustainable Management of Wastes from Business and Public Sector Organisations in Scotland

The Scottish Executive issued a consultation on proposals for the sustainable management of commercial and industrial waste.  This waste stream constitutes a significant proportion of Scotland’s total waste arisings and yet has not benefited from a coherent national strategy and association targets for waste reduction.

In its response, SESA pressed for a more coherent, national approach to the sustainable management of commercial and industrial waste and pressed for an overarching strategy for the collection, analysis and dissemination of waste data.  The true costs of the management of business waste, supported by stricter penalties for non-compliance with waste law- such as the duty of care, must be communicated to businesses in order for waste management to register sufficiently in the day-to-day operation of a business.

SESA suggested this could be achieved through a better communication and education strategy, but perhaps more importantly, through better implementation and enforcement of producer responsibility regulations.
