Draft Scottish Planning Policy (SSP6): Renewable Energy
The Scottish Executive issued a consultation on proposed guidance to local authorities on how the planning system should manage the process of encouraging, approving and implementing renewable energy proposals when preparing development plans. The Scottish Executive has set a target for 40% of Scotland’s electricity to be generated from renewable energy sources by 2020.
SESA welcomed the Scottish Executive’s acknowledgement that energy from waste and landfill gas have the potential to continue to contribute significantly to Scotland’s energy generation mix but noted the guidance lacked the necessary level of detail. The current planning system was noted a barrier to the effective integration of renewable energy supply schemes, such as heat, into new development.
