Managing Waste

Means of Disposal for municipal, industrial and commercial waste

It is estimated that approximately 103 million tonnes of waste are produced each year in the UK by households, commerce and industry (excluding construction and demolition wastes).

Commercial businesses reuse or recycle around 42% of their waste, while industrial businesses recycle approximately 47% (according to the latest survey figures).

The amount of waste recycled or composted has increased, and accounted for 34.5% of household waste in 2007-8.  There has been a year on year decrease in the  amount of non-recycled waste per person over the last six years. It is now at the lowest level since estimates were first made in 1983-4. A further 11% is used in energy from waste facilities.
