Incineration

Value can still be recovered from waste which can not be recycled or composted · by using it to generate energy, heat and to collect materials for recycling. Every municipal waste incinerator in the UK recovers value from the waste treated. All fifteen facilities recover energy and some recover heat, metals and other materials which can be safely recycled and used in construction. The UK also has two hazardous waste facilities which convert hazardous waste into a safe and inert material.

Currently, 2.8 million tonnes (9%) of municipal waste and 100,000 tonnes (3%) of hazardous waste is treated in incineration facilities in the UK. In 2002, incineration of waste generated the equivalent of 726,000 tonnes of oil · generating enough power for over ¼ million homes through Combined Heat and Power schemes.

Incineration plants operate to the highest design specifications and emissions are stringently monitored by the Environment Agency. Emission control standards are reviewed regularly, and the Waste Incineration Directive has set strict standards which all incinerators must meet from next year.
